Book Diary – 2016

To Copy the wise Knight of sufferlandria Paul, I’m going to keep a running list of the books I read for the year. Mostly to remind myself what I’ve read, but also to be able to look up what I read to share with others when they ask me about something I read a book about.

2016 Books

==============

January

  1. An Unwelcome Quest: Magic 2.0, Book 3 – Book three in Scott Meyers Magic 2.0 series. As entertaining and fun to read as the rest of the series. Hope he writes more.
  2. Space Chronicles: Facing the Ultimate Frontier – Neil Degrasse book about space stuff? started with a few chapters about budget and money, yawn, then went into 100 level stuff about space. Had I had better book to read on the way home I’d not have finished it. Was not horrible but it did not keep my interest.
  3. Brilliance (Brilliant trilogy book 1) – Marcus Sakey, great books!! Suddenly 1 out of 1000 kids are born Brilliant. The government has no clue how to deal with them in a positive way. Nick Cooper saves the word
  4. A Better world (Brilliant trilogy Book 2) – Nick is back to save the New Cainin Holdfast and all of the brilliants. great cliff hanger of an ending.
  5. Written in Fire (Brilliance trilogy Book 3) – Loved the book, was sad when it was over. I want more.
  6. How to be a Poker Player – Narrator in audible was horrible. Sounded like a someone trying to talk creepy sexy low voice with a lisp. book was ok, narrator ruined it
  7. Beyond Bigger Leaner Stronger – The first 1/3 and start of most chapters in this book felt like listening to Don Dupree on late night infomercial telling me how much I needed and wanted the program. Finally we got to some science and education which was good stuff. Lots of crap wrapped around some good meat.
  8. Lesbian Poker night – Needing to get over the infomercial body building and horrible narration from the poker book. I figured some smut was in order. Which was entertaining.
  9. The Girl in the Spiders Web . I enjoyed the Dragon Tattoo books by Stieg Larsson. This books has some of the same characters, but’s not as good. I’ll finish it, but not in love with it.
  10. Fool Moon: Book Two Dresden Files – Love Dresden. Awesome fun books and there are like 20 more to read when I need something fun vs. learning
  11. Doctors: The History of Scientific Medicine Revealed Through Biography – I love medical learning, and history. this lecture combined both and gave me some brilliant ideas to think about and directly apply at work.
  12. Rich Bitch: A Simple 12-Step Plan for Getting Your Financial Life Together – I enjoy books on finance and Nicole’s book is entraining and informative. Great book
  13. Grave Peril (The Dresden Files, Book 3) – Third Harry Dresden book. Awesome like the rest. each new book I read is better then the last
  14. Microsoft Future Visions book – After reading about seeing a copy in the MSR building I picked up a free copy from amazon Was an entertaining thought provoking read
  15. How to Improve Your Marriage Without Talking About It – meh, not awesome, not horrible. Did not speak to me personally as much as the Truth did. She was obsessed with shame as a core male motivator and insecurity for women. Almost none of the book applied to Michelle and I.

February

  1. The Tao of Dating: The Smart Woman’s Guide to Being Absolutely Irresistible – I’ve read the game and number of Pick up artist books for the view into human interaction. This book appealed to be because it was the other view point. Turned out to be a great read.
  2. Ringworld – I had the urge to explore with Teela and Luie Woo, so back to a good old comfort book. I read this book around 9 the first time and it’s stuck with me since. Like Time Enough for love I read it once a year for some reason. I should go find more books about Teela and her luck because an author could have fun with that.
  3. Parenting your Powerful Child – kind of was not pleased with this one. none of the advice seemed to do much for me or make me happy or learn me to be smarter. did not feel like it was backed up with data or science well. Did not speak to me
  4. Sixth Colum by Heinlein. Great Heinlein book
  5. Around the world – Great classic book. Maddex and I listed to this book in the car. He’s going to be warped listening to things at triple speed with dad.
  6. Super Mario: How Nintendo Conquered America This was a great book. took me back to my 80-90’s childhood.
  7. Beat the crowd Ken fisher – I give it a “meh” as far as investing books good.
  8. Be a leader zig Ziegler – Audiobook, Zig is the narrator and had great words and stories to tell, but he sure sounds like southern Baptist preacher to me
  9. How the stock market works – Great courses talks, and i loved this one. Great intro and slightly above information on how the stocks work. Made me happy to listen to this one. And I learned a few things
  10. Rise of the Robots – I enjoy books about our possible future where robots and AI take over / supplement most all labor.
  11. Why we make things and why it matters – this was all one guys ideas about how building is good. he had ok ideas, but nothing to back it up that made me happy
  12. The hard thing about hard things – Ben Horowitz, cofounder of Andreessen Horowitz and one of Silicon Valley’s most respected and experienced entrepreneurs. This book was great! loved all of the horrible stories Ben tells about his adventures running startups and investing.

March

  1. Customs of the World: Using Cultural Intelligence to Adapt, Wherever You Are –  Awesome read. I work in a company where over half of the 100,000 employees are not from Mercia. I’ll never at co-workers the same again now have a deeper understanding of cultural differences.
  2. Nemsis Games – had a difficult time getting into this one. Might have been too much thinking during listening, so I’ll try again later
  3. the Didymus Contingency – religion is something i read to understand others, for stories, and for it’s application to history. books with Jesus in them are not on my reading list. but this one has Jesus and time travel in it, and no preaching. Is not horrible as far as books go.
  4. Love Life – another book read and written by Rob Lowe. He’s fun, enjoyed the book
  5. Million Dollar Outline – A book about being a writer and how to make books. super informative book trying to get Michelle to read it.
  6. Ring World Engineers – Book two in the series, not the first time I’ve read it. Great book.
  7. Down the Rabbit hole – Holly Madison book about her life up till now with some glimpses at girls next door and playboy. I enjoyed it.
  8. Necronomicon – HP love craft classic. His writing in this book has a cadence to me that was almost poetic.
  9. http://waitbutwhy.com/ – I read the entire wait but why website, then I sponsored them on patreon – the AI posts then Tesla got me into it. After those I read them all.

April

  1. Time Enough for Love – I must read this book once a year because it’s awesome. Probably my favorite book
  2. To Sail Beyond the Sunset –  After you read Time enough for love you have to read about Lazarus’s mom. another awesome book
  3. Methuselahs children – Read this one again because it’s some more Lazarus.
  4. It’s a long story– Willie Nelson biography. totally reminds me of biography written by the guy we bought our land from. Crazy crazy life.
  5. My year Running Dangerously – CNN correspondent Tom Foreman tell the tale of his daughter talking him into running a marathon with her that sparked him to take on a 50 mile ultramarathon.
  6. Good Calories, Bad Calories: Fats, Carbs, and the Controversial Science of Diet and Health Science and history of dieting and eating science – YES PLEASE. listened Took me 2 months to finish this book while running. It’s a 25 hour audio book, I run about 30 minutes a few times a week and listen at triple speed. And took a few runs off for other books I could not put down; took me a while. – I’m going to rate this book as the best food / nutrition book I’ve ever read. It warrants it’s own post and an amazon review. Amazing book.
  7. The Big Book of Submission – Read by Rose Caraway, who has a great reading voice for erotica. This has been a great palate cleanser between books, It’s a bunch of short 2-10 minute stories by different authors. Some were amazing, some were good.
  8. Summer night – Book 4 in the Harry Dresden series. These books keep getting better, and I will be back for more in the series soon.
  9. Willie Nelson It’s a long Story – Story about Willies life mostly written by willie.. Cousin calls ” Willie the house is on fire”  Willie “is the garage on fire yet” – cousin “No” Willie ” Push all of the cars into the garage insurance will get me new ones” – now that’s some good thinking
  10. ***** The Stone Man – Reminded me a spooky horror Steven king sci-fi book. unique story, very entertaining, was hard to put down. Going with best new book not the next in a series I’ve read this year. Super good book. Already bought a few more from the author to read. Enjoyed it immensely – I rated it Five stars on amazon.
  11. Mote in gods eye – When I first read this book at like age 14 Peter Gabriel was playing on loop. the songs have always reminded me mote prime. Reading about mote prime reminded of the song walls without frontiers. Great book, good music. I’ll pick up the next one next month. For now last week was a 50% off your wish list sale, and I might have spent 250$ – ekkkk.. Better read those first.
  12. Grace & Style : The Art of Pretending you Have It | So, I listen to / watch Hannah Hart and Grace Helbig on youtube from time to time while writing. Figured I might as well buy their books. Her first chapter about body issues is a glimpse of things to combat with my girls; sooo much work.
  13. ***** Don’t tell my Parents I’m a SuperVillian –  Wow what a great book. My frist book by Richard Roberts, and it won’t be my last. Reminded me of Emperor Mollusk Versus the Sinister Brain, which is another great super smart super villain book has great fun with their toys book. – I give this bugger a five star rating. Fun to read.

  15. Searching for Annabel Chong: Demystifying the Legend of Singapore’s Most Famous Pornstar! – The information in the book was ok, but I did not love the book.
  16. Seriously…I’m Kidding – Ellen Degeneres book written in her ADD style. Like 53 chapters at a few pages a chapter all over the place. Entertaining and enjoyable.
  17. Secrets of Professional Tournament Poker, Volume 1: Fundamentals and How to Handle Varying Stack Sizes – Book hit me with all kinds of math and was hard to follow when I don’t give it 100%. data presented was amazing, but it was deep.
  18. Revolt in 2100 – Another great Heinlein book.
  19. The Program by Suzanne Young. Listened to this one on our road trip to Tillamook. Interesting teen drama story about kids being treated for suicide by memory loss. The build up was great then the ending kind of fell apart. There look to be more books all over the place. book .5 and .6 and book 2 and 2.5 – They are all in the wish list I’ll come back to this world some day.
  20. I am Spook – Leonard Nemoy’s second book. Written mostly by him and read by him. Short book, but it made me happy to read, and I learned more about a great man.

May

  1. Technomancer: Unspeakable Things, Book 1 – BV Larson book about magic and stuff in our current time frame. reminded me big time of Dresden files. Great book. Looking forward to reading the next one here soon
  2. The Atopia Chronicles (Atopia Series) – Book ran all over the place covering piles of different people, much game of thrones covering everyone of value in the world. I didn’t love that part of the book. the Story was good, the view on near future kept me reading. Matthew Mather lays out a realistic possible near future that still has me thinking
  3. Beyond Belief: My Secret Life Inside Scientology and My Harrowing Escape – Her escape did not seem harrowing, but I am sure that helped sell the book. The author accurately captured a childhood view of living and growing up in a cult and she shared an inside view of scientology. Good read.
  4. Graces Guide– by Grace Helbig. this books has lists, and then some more lists and reads like my ADD mind. Entertaining and some incite into girl minds. I like understanding people.
  5. The Mechanical – Great story, not written in a way that works for me. Had a hard time working out who the characters were because it was drown in words describing things. MEH, would not read again and probably will avoid author. Sadly his stories appear to be good, but style does not work for me.
  6. Family Fortunes: How to Build Family Wealth and Hold on to It for 100 Years – a book directed at theories about how to create, keep, and maintain family fortunes past the second generation.
  7. The Dystopia Chronicles (Atopia Series) – Second book in Atopia series. I tried really hard to read this one, but I could not keep up with the seemly disjoined stories. I need fewer stories / leads in my books. Made me sad because the authors view of our future is amazing.
  8. Charlie Munger: The Complete Investor –  I’m a shareholder and have always enjoyed learning from Warren and Charlie. Tren does a great job covering Charlie’s thinking and processes. fun book
  9. SPQR: A history of Ancient Rome – Meh I love Rome and history, but the writing style was not for me
  10. The Nerdist Way – A book about life lessons by Chris Hardwick. Was entertaining, but I expected more biography. Once I changed my expectation I enjoyed the book.
  11. The Truth – Neil straus book I read last year – Words I said then “I should take the time to make an entire post or number of posts about this single book and the impact it’s had on my thinking and outlook on life. One of the things I created / have done based on the thinking caused by the truth lead me is this very blog, and writing my line in the sand post to Michelle. Neil is an author who wants to learn about something then spends a few years diving in deeper than most anyone else can all while writing about it. In The Truth Neil writes about relationships, fidelity, polyamory, sex addiction, love ETC. The journey Neil took is one I’ve partially mirrored at various stages of my life. It deeply spoke to me. The truth made me think, and is still making me think. I’ll read it again in the next few months to spark more thinking. “- The book again hit me pretty deep is making me change more things. Need to do a whole blog on it soon. I’ll read this one again later this year I’m thinking.
  12. Great World Religions: Islam – A great courses lecture about Islam. Like most religions it’s core values are good life models and not horrible but extremists ruin everything. Islam seems to be deep in extremists, and the extremists exercise cult like control over all followers. Plus the preying 5 times a day is a great way to keep it strong in peoples minds. Kev does not like religion.
  13. Money Management Skills – A great courses lecture on not spending stupid. I enjoy having save more reinforced.
  14. Meet Me in Atlantis: Across Three Continents in Search of the Legendary Sunken City –  I love reading about Atlantis, Mark does a great job researching the massive amount of stuff out there and talking to people and looking and sharing knowledge and telling a good story at the same time. Fun read.

June

  1. Junkyard Planet: Travels in the Billion-Dollar Trash Trade – History and future of the American, now world wide scrap metal trade. One interesting bit of the book was the scrap classification code history. The story behind this list resulting in metal classifications like || Grape—COCKS AND FAUCETS || Shall consist of mixed clean red and yellow brass, including chrome or nickel-plated, free of gas cocks, beer faucets, and aluminum and zinc base die cast material, and to contain a minimum of 35% semi-red.

  15. Mars Rover Curiosity: An Inside Account from Curiosity’s Chief Engineer – Great fun read for a logistics and engineer and science geek like me. So many tiny changes with huge ramifications to the rovers design. Loved reading about how all of the problems were managed and mitigated and dealt with and being exposed to the thinking for choices.
